County Spay/Neuter Assistance, Your Dog, and the Law
How to comply with the law and save some money, too

Does my dog have to be licensed or vaccinated?
Flagstaff and Coconino County laws require that your dog be licensed yearly with the County and vaccinated for rabies by a veterinarian. Vaccination is usually done at four months of age, then one year later, then every three years after that. Both licensing and rabies vaccination are important to protect the health of your pet, as well as the animals and citizens of Coconino County. Should your unlicensed, unvaccinated dog get loose and be picked up by Animal Control, you will be required to license it, pay for a rabies vaccination and pay kennel costs and redemption fees besides.

What will it cost to register my dog?
$10 per year if your dog has been spayed or neutered, $20 if it has not.

Is my dog eligible for a County spay/neuter certificate? How do I get one?
If your dog is licensed, you are eligible for a $30 spay/neuter certificate, good at any Flagstaff veterinary clinic. Present proof of license at the County Health Department, Animal Management Office, at 2500 N. Fort Valley Road (226-2717). They are open 8-5, Monday-Friday.

My dog isn’t licensed, and has not been spayed or neutered. What should I do?
Bring proof of rabies vaccination to the County Health Department and license your dog for $20. You will receive a $30 spay/neuter certificate. You will be obeying the law and be $10 ahead. Your veterinarian will accept the $30 certificate toward the cost of your pet’s spay or neuter surgery and give you proof of spay/neuter which will enable you to license your dog at the reduced fee next year and thereafter (current rate is $10 per year).

Can I use the $30 County certificate along with assistance from Planned Pethood?
Yes. Present both certificates to the veterinarian at the time of surgery. The Planned Pethood program does not apply if you have adopted your pet from the Coconino Humane Association. For information about the Humane Association spay/neuter program, call 526-1076.

What if I have a cat?
There is currently no licensing or rabies vaccination law for cats, and County certificates do not apply to cats. However, we highly recommend that you have your cat vaccinated against rabies as well as spayed or neutered. Planned Pethood can help with your spay/neuter costs.
